Children born into poverty in Haiti face a life of hunger, poor health and misery. The poorest families often have to place their child with another family as a domestic servant in hopes that their child will be fed and educated. In Gressier, Haiti Respire Christian School reaches out to the poorest families to provide the children with an education and healthy meals. Respire also reaches out to families with disabled children to educate them on how to care for their child and to see their child’s potential, not what they lack. Every child deserves an opportunity and with your help will have a chance to succeed.

Purpose

Respire Haiti Christian School was established to encourage, educate and empower the most vulnerable children in Gressier, Haiti. They are the voice for orphans, disabled children and restaveks (child servants). Respire’s programs provide quality education from Kindergarten through 9th grade and daily meals to over 500 children. They also offer their students medical and dental services.
In developing countries like Haiti, superstition and voodoo traditions shun children with mental and physical disabilities. Respire Christian School is working to bridge that gap. They teach parents and the community that children with disabilities are not cursed and that they should be cared for like any other child. Families with disabled children receive physical and occupational services as well as training on how to care for their child’s special needs.

Located 12 miles west of Port-au-Prince many of the people of Gressier live on less than $3 a day. They toil in the fields, haul water from miles away and often live on one meal a day

Program Highlights

Since Respire opened their doors in 2011, they have continued to grow and expand. Facilities and services currently include:
  • 18 classrooms
  • Education for 525 students from kindergarten through 9th grade of which 60% are restaveks
  • 100 staff members and volunteers
  • Two special needs classrooms
  • Physical and occupational therapy services
  • Kay Libete A – Safe House (a transitional home for young girls)
  • Clean water distribution program
  • Love+1 Medical Clinic with triage area, a dental room and a pharmacy
  • Outreach medical services for nearly 2,000 people

Housing
  • $27,855 a year will feed the 525 children in school two nutritious meals a day
  • $25,332 a year will pay for one doctor, three nurses and an administrative assistant

In October 2016 Respire broke ground for their new 6,500 square foot Therapy Center. They have raised 30% and have $291,800 more to raise.

Education

$11,760 a year supports one entire classroom of 28 students with books, uniforms, two meals per day and basic medical exams
$420 a year or just $35 a month supports one student (school fees, uniform, books)
